The Institute: The National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM) is a premier institute for research in applied and basic rock mechanics, set up under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India in the year 1988. The Institute provides services for the mining, hydro and nuclear-power sector and infrastructure industries etc., related to underground space engineering and tunnelling industry. The important areas of work by NIRM are Engineering Geology, Engineering Geophysics, Engineering Seismology, Seismotectonics, Geotechnical Engineering, In-situ Rock Mass Testing, Rock Fracture Mechanics, Numerical Modelling, Rock Blasting & Excavation Engineering, Mine Design, Tunnel Engineering and Geotechnical Instrumentation & Monitoring. Presently it has a total manpower of 41 and has offices at Bengaluru (Head Office) and at Kolar Gold Fields (Regd. Office).
